Why are you writing this book? What is it about? Why now? How could you leave your enviable life style?
We have relocated our home base, for the boat, to San Francisco to be a part of the America's Cup excitement. With our home in Reno it is convenient to enjoy both.
Upon return, inescapably, I became more aware of not only the U.S.'s business condition but the world at large. The answer of course is creating wealth through productivity. I know 'wealth' is sometime used negatively but creating value is what feeds the poor and pays the taxes.
Upon closer examination I found 'common sense' was rapidly on the decline. Big words, computer driven charts & graphs and excuses served in place of results. Education is too often serving as a hindrance instead of a boost up and we won't even speak of the student loan debt situation. The principles and practices that made Friday's great in the beginning worked, still work and needed resurrecting. The approach is all about principle driven actions and decision making not 'lists' and 'rules'. I use analogies, graphics, metaphors and universal common sense. I cite and use examples all around us but sadly they are the exception. Finally, Rush Bowman (a Friday's colleague) in an email to his brother, (more about him later), described the book this way, "It's a History of Friday's, the culture it spawned and the business philosophy that drove it. ( Dan's ) Plus a liberal dose of nonsense and tall tales."
As for the lifestyle, the book is hopefully a brief pause. I plan to put together a boys trip to Hawaii with our women waiting on a sunny beach for the sailor boys!
